Sexy Beijing: Discovering Anna May Wong

Born to a Chinese laundryman's family in 1905 in Los Angeles, she went on to become a Hollywood icon in a career that started in 1919 and went on till the 1960s.



Her career and personal life suffered because of California's anti-miscegenation laws. Despite this, she had a mixed reception in China where many people criticized her for bringing shame upon Chinese people in a way reminiscent of the treatment Zhang Ziyi sometimes gets at home, despite her popularity abroad.



Graham Russel Gao Hodges is the author of a recent book about her called Anna May Wong: From Laundryman's Daughter to Hollywood Legend. This episode of Sexy Beijing is an interview by Su Fei with Professor Hodges.

A short film about Uighurs in Beijing.The Uighurs, pronounced Wee-gers and sometimes spelled Uyghurs, are a Muslim ethnic group from Xinjiang, Chinese central Asia.

Danwei TV interviews several Uighurs in Beijing selling lamb kebabs (yang rou chuan'r) and Uighur candy, and shows their working conditions.

Interviews were conducted in Mandarin, which is not the Uighurs native tongue: they speak their own language, which is related to Turkish.

Danwei TV Hard Hat Show: Super Girl Frenzy



Danwei TV 4 is about the Super Girls TV show.

Chao Nu, the abbreviation of Chao Ji Nu Sheng (超级女声) or Super Voice Girls, is the name of a televised singing competition similar to American Idol, produced and broadcast by Hunan Province Satellite Television Station. In 2005, the second year of the program, Super Girls became a runaway TV hit, captivating young women across the nation, making stars of the finalists and reaping windfall profits for Hunan TV.

This video summarizes last year's show and includes interviews with frenzied fans of runner up Zhou Bichang.
